I installed the testing kernel 2.6.24.3-22.fc8 and now everything works; I really do enjoy the emerald decorator.

I tried the iwl394 driver again and now it works; Wonderful, but with the 2.6.24.3-12 kernel, there is a problem with the intel video; From Xorg.0.log:
(EE) intel(0): Could not initialize the DRM memory manager.
Here is the bug report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=433728

Just after a kernel update one would have to reboot before being able to build the ipw3945 driver, since the make scripts rely on the uname program. So instead of rebooting, I created a "uname" script that returns the new kernel version and placed it under /root/bin and added /root/bin in PATH before all others.

I installed Fedora 8 on my notebook (dell inspiron 640m). Everything works with no extra effort except the wireless. So I added the ATrpms to install support for my wireless (ipw3945). The default iwl3945 almost worked: it showed all access points and even connected, but I could never get out; Pinging the connected-to-wireless router did not work ... crazy. Actually, the atrpms were very slow at getting a build that matched the latest updated kernel for Fedora 8, so I just downloaded the source code and build it myself.

I got "Harry Potter 7" at 2007-07-21 00:10 at Borders store 0001 (Ann Arbor). They had a crazy pre-line Friday morning which I also stood at so that my finial wait was short (10 minutes after midnight). They gave out different colored and styled wristbands at the preline. They hide the whole wristband pre-line deal, so if my wife had not kept asking about the book release everytime we went to Borders, I would have shown up that night and had a very large wait. My wait would have been larger, if not for a nice lady I stood in pre-line with that, just before midnight had to argue that our checkered orange wristbands were on the same level at the solid orange wristbands. Thanks again, wife and nice lady.

I installed Fedora 7 on my notebook (dell inspiron 640m). Everything works with no extra effort except the wireless. So I added the ATrpms to install support for my wireless (ipw3945).

I installed Fedora Core 6 on my notebook (dell inspiron 640m). The desktop effects work when I use the "i810" driver in xorg.conf (thanks Intel!). The install incorrectly selected i586 instead of i686 so I only had one core working and it had no speed control. To fix, I just did a yum remove of the kernel and then a yum install of the i686 kernel. After a reboot, I then added the ATrpms to install support for my wireless (ipw3945).

I installed Fedora Core 6 on my family desktop computer. I just had to add the rpm.livna.org repo and then I did a simple yum install the nvidia module in order to turn on the desktop effects.

It is colder outside now, so I can only work a few hours per day outside. I guess for winter I will have to work more in my office; but I will move things around.

I recently bought a notebook computer (Dell 640m) for $800. I run Fedora Core 5 on it and found that the ATrpms are wonderful.

I spend several hours each day working outside on my front porch with my notebook now. It is brilliant.

For years I worked in my home office (a spare bedroom). I feel wonderfully free now.

I do not anticipate every wanting to use a workstation ever again; FC6 and Compiz will just make using a notebook that much better.
